Development of Children's Feet

Babies’ feet look like smaller versions of adult feet, however, that is where the similarities end. When babies are born, bones will gradually replace the cartilage as they begin to use their feet while crawling and walking. The foot shape and structure will start to form during the first six months and the foot size will increase by three times before their first birthday. Several joints and 26 bones will form to comprise the adult foot and this process is generally completed by the age of 18. It is beneficial for the child to walk barefoot while indoors as this can help to strengthen the entire foot. When it is time for the first pair of shoes to be purchased, a good choice is shoes that are flexible and supportive. Many parents notice their children are bow-legged or lean toward walking on their tip toes. This is normal and walking will gradually strengthen the feet to be able to stand normally. If you would like additional information about how your child’s feet develop, it is suggested that you consult with a podiatrist.

The health of a child’s feet is vital to their overall well-being. If you have any questions regarding foot health, contact one of our podiatrists of Footcare Now. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Tips for Keeping Children's Feet Healthy

  • Make sure their shoes fit properly
  • Look for any signs of in-toeing or out-toeing
  • Check to see if they have Clubfoot (condition that affects your child’s foot and ankle, twisting the heel and toes inward) which is one of the most common nonmajor birth defects.
  • Lightly cover your baby’s feet (Tight covers may keep your baby from moving their feet freely, and could prevent normal development)
  • Allow your toddler to go shoeless (Shoes can be restricting for a young child’s foot)
  • Cut toenails straight across to avoid ingrown toenails
  • Keep your child’s foot clean and dry
  • Cover cuts and scrapes. Wash any scratches with soap and water and cover them with a bandage until they’ve healed.

Relief From a Plantar Fibroma

Pain in the arch of the foot may indicate a plantar fibroma has developed. It is defined as a growth that develops on the plantar fascia, which is the portion of tissue that connects the heel to the toes. A plantar fibroma is found on the sole of the foot and may cause discomfort, although it is generally benign. The majority of fibromas often measure less than one inch, causing pain and discomfort as a result of the pressure that is exerted on the nerves. There may be existing medical conditions that can lead some patients to develop a plantar fibroma. These can include diabetes, excessive alcohol use disorder, or possibly epilepsy. After a diagnosis is performed, which consists of having an X-ray or MRI taken, treatment can begin. Mild relief may be found when the symptoms are managed by wearing custom-made orthotics or taking pain medication. If you have a plantar fibroma, it is suggested that you confer with a podiatrist who can offer you the correct treatment, which may include minor surgery for permanent removal.

A plantar fibroma may disrupt your daily activities. If you have any concerns, contact one of our podiatrists of Footcare Now. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Plantar Fibroma

A plantar fibroma is a fibrous knot in the arch of the foot. It is embedded in the plantar fascia which is a band of tissue that extends from the heel to the toes along the bottom of the foot. There can be multiple plantar fibromas in the feet at the same time. There are no known causes for this condition. If you have a plantar fibroma, there will be a bump in the arch of your foot that cannot be missed. Any associated pain is most often due to a shoe rubbing against the nodule. Non-surgical options, such as steroid injections, physical therapy, and orthotics should be tried first. Surgery is a last resort and is the only thing that will remove a plantar fibroma entirely. Consult with a podiatrist for a proper diagnosis and to determine the treatment regimen that is right for you.

What Causes a Plantar Fibroma?

While there are no specific causes identified, a plantar fibroma can possibly come from genetic predisposition or the formation of scar tissue that forms from healing the tears in the plantar fascia.

What Are the Symptoms of a Plantar Fibroma?

There will be a noticeable lump in the arch of the foot that may or may not cause pain. If pain is felt, it is typically because a shoe is rubbing up against the lump or when walking or standing barefoot.

Treatment and Prevention

A plantar fibroma will not disappear without treatment, but it can get smaller and be a non-issue. If pain persists, a podiatrist examines the foot and when the arch of the foot is pressed, pain can be felt down to the toes. An MRI or biopsy might be performed to help diagnose or evaluate the plantar fibroma. The following non-surgical options are generally enough to reduce the size and pain of these nodules:

  • Steroid injections
  • Orthotics
  • Physical therapy to help apply anti-inflammatory creams on the bump

Surgery is considered if the mass increases in size and the patient continues to feel pain after non-surgical methods are tried.

Benefits of Foot Massage Therapy

Having a foot massage performed may be an effective method of reducing stress. Research has shown there is a difference between foot massage and foot massage therapy. People who get foot massages are aware of the good feeling they can bring, whereas foot therapy targets the pain points that are triggered, and the correct amount of pressure is applied to them. This may be helpful in keeping the feet strong, as they carry the weight of the body. Wearing shoes that do not fit correctly may result in overstraining the foot muscles, and this can be addressed during foot massage therapy. It can be easier to relax when this is performed, and an added benefit may be better blood circulation, lowered blood pressure and sleep quality may be improved. Patients have found existing foot wounds have healed faster, and the immune system may be enhanced. If you have questions about foot massage therapy, it is suggested that you consult with a podiatrist who can provide a detailed explanation.

Foot therapy is often necessary for those recovering from either foot deformities or foot injuries. If you have concerns regarding therapy, consult with one of our podiatrists from Footcare Now. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Most Common Injuries

People who are active or athletes are prone to a variety of injuries. Therefore, it is often important to take part in physical therapy in order to quickly get back on the right track.

What to Do When Injured

Physical Therapy – This specialized treatment will focus on the affected area, speeding up recovery and the overall healing process. It is a proven method that has helped millions of people return from any injury.

During physical therapy you will undergo regimented training to get back into full form. Training is often very difficult, especially at first when the foot feels weak. Physical therapy often involves:

Basic stretching and twisting exercises – getting the feet’s mobility and flexibility up.

Massaging – the therapist will massage the injured area in order to activate the muscles and relax them.

Strengthening Exercises – this allows the muscles in the affected area to regain their full strength, a vital step towards full recovery.

We Can Treat Your Foot or Ankle Pain

Foot or ankle pain can negatively affect your day-to-day life and can occur due to several different conditions. Pain can also be an indicator of a more serious underlying condition, which is why you should seek professional help as soon as you notice any abnormalities in your feet.

Successful Treatment Methods for a Broken Toe

A broken toe hurts. It can happen from stubbing it against a piece of furniture or dropping a heavy object. Immediate symptoms often include bruising and swelling, and walking is often difficult. A broken toe generally takes approximately four weeks to heal, and it can help to refrain from walking on it and frequently elevating the foot. Many people use crutches when they have a broken toe, which can help to provide mobility. A mildly broken toe can be treated by using the buddy taping method. This is done by taping the affected toe to the toe next to it, which generally provides the necessary stability as the healing process occurs. It is beneficial to place a piece of felt or foam between the toes, which helps to prevent the toes from rubbing against each other. If the bone is protruding from the skin, this is considered to be severely fractured and often requires medical attention from a podiatrist. If you have broken your toe, it is strongly suggested that you contact this type of foot doctor who can diagnose and treat this injury accordingly.

A broken toe can be very painful and lead to complications if not properly fixed. If you have any concerns about your feet, contact one of our podiatrists from Footcare Now. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What to Know About a Broken Toe

Although most people try to avoid foot trauma such as banging, stubbing, or dropping heavy objects on their feet, the unfortunate fact is that it is a common occurrence. Given the fact that toes are positioned in front of the feet, they typically sustain the brunt of such trauma. When trauma occurs to a toe, the result can be a painful break (fracture).

Symptoms of a Broken Toe

  • Throbbing pain
  • Swelling
  • Bruising on the skin and toenail
  • The inability to move the toe
  • Toe appears crooked or disfigured
  • Tingling or numbness in the toe

Generally, it is best to stay off of the injured toe with the affected foot elevated.

Severe toe fractures may be treated with a splint, cast, and in some cases, minor surgery. Due to its position and the pressure it endures with daily activity, future complications can occur if the big toe is not properly treated.

Laser Treatment for Nail Fungus

Toenail fungus, or onychomycosis, causes the nails to thicken, separate, and discolor. It is an affliction that is difficult to remove and stop from recurring. It is also contagious and can spread to other body parts and people directly exposed to it. Laser treatment uses concentrated light to help kill fungus and prevent its growth. This treatment started in the 1980s, and newer types of laser treatment have been introduced since then. Those who may benefit most from laser treatment for nail fungus include children, pregnant women, and those with underlying health conditions or problems with medication intolerances. The cost and number of sessions vary, as does insurance coverage. If you have a stubborn case of toenail fungus, it is suggested that you contact a podiatrist to discuss laser treatment as an option.

Laser treatment can be an effective way to get rid of toenail fungus. If you have any questions about laser treatment, consult with one of our podiatrists from Footcare Now. Our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality treatment for fungal nails.

What Are Toenail Fungal Infections?

Onychomycosis, or fungal infection of the nail, is a relatively common and non-serious condition. Around 10 percent of U.S. citizens are afflicted with fungal nails. Common forms of fungus that infect the nail include dermatophytes, yeasts, and molds.

Symptoms of Toenail Fungal Infections Include:

  • Nail thickening
  • Brittleness of the nail
  • Discoloration of the nail

Diagnosis for Fungal Nails

Fungal infections are diagnosed by fungal culture and microscopy. This will rule out any other conditions such as nail trauma, psoriasis, lichen planus, and onychogryphosis.

What Is Laser Treatment?

Laser treatment is a non-invasive, safe, quick, and painless procedure that uses the heat from a laser to kill fungus in the nail. Each infected nail is targeted with a laser for several minutes. The treatment is usually utilized several different times over a select period. During this time, a podiatrist will keep an eye on the infection.

What Can Trigger Erythromelalgia?

A rare condition that is known as erythromelalgia can cause a consistent, intense burning sensation in the feet. It can alter the quality of life, despite the fact it is not a fatal condition. Additional symptoms that are associated with this condition can include swelling, tenderness, and a burning feeling that can radiate to the entire foot. The symptoms often affect both feet and can be severe. This condition may develop from genetic reasons, and can happen as attacks. They can begin with itching, and may progress to severe pain. These attacks can be triggered by warm weather, sweating, exercise, or being immobile for long periods of time. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, it is strongly suggested that you are under the care of a podiatrist who  can properly diagnose and prescribe medication that may help the symptoms of erythromelalgia.

Some foot conditions may require additional professional care. If you have any concerns, contact one of our podiatrists of Footcare Now. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Rare Foot Conditions

The majority of foot conditions are common and can be treated by a podiatrist.  Standard diagnostic procedures are generally used to identify specific conditions and treatment can be rendered. A podiatrist also treats rare foot conditions which can be difficult to diagnose and may need extra attention and care.

There are many rare foot conditions that can affect children. Some of these can include:

  • Freiberg’s disease
  • Kohler’s disease
  • Maffucci syndrome

Freiberg’s disease - This can be seen as a deterioration and flattening of a metatarsal bone that exists in the ball of the foot. It typically affects pre-teen and teenage girls, but can affect anyone at any age. Symptoms that can accompany this can be swelling, stiffness, and the patient may limp.

Kohler’s disease - This often targets the bone in the arch of the foot and affects younger boys. It can lead to an interruption of the blood supply which ultimately can lead to bone deterioration. The patient may limp or experience tenderness, swelling, and redness.

Maffucci syndrome - This affects the long bones in a child’s foot leading to the development of abnormal bone lesions. They are benign growths and typically develop in early childhood and the bones may be susceptible to breaking.

A podiatrist can properly diagnose and treat all types of rare foot conditions. If your child is affected by any of these symptoms or conditions, please don’t hesitate to call our office so the correct treatment method can begin.

Hiking and Foot Pain

If you are a hiker, you probably relish in the fresh air and exercise hiking gives you. However, as with any other athletic pursuit, hiking can cause injury or discomfort to the feet. If feet are not well-soled, well-rested, or stretched and strengthened for hiking participation, foot problems can easily arise. Foot pain after hiking is typically symptomatic of a foot injury. Repetitive stress on the feet or carrying a heavy backpack while hiking can cause such injuries. Common hiking foot injuries include capsulitis or inflammation of tissues surrounding a joint. This often happens around the ball of the foot and can lead to pain and swelling. This can also affect just one toe, and if left unattended, can lead to hammertoe. Pain might alternatively be centered in the heel area and cause a heel spur and/or plantar fasciitis. If you hike for exercise or pleasure, make sure you wear well-fitted shoes for the activity, stretching and strengthening foot exercises prior to exercising, and rest between hikes. If foot pain persists, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist for a diagnosis and treatment plan.

Sports related foot and ankle injuries require proper treatment before players can go back to their regular routines. For more information, contact one of our podiatrists of Footcare Now. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Sports Related Foot and Ankle Injuries

Foot and ankle injuries are a common occurrence when it comes to athletes of any sport. While many athletes dismiss the initial aches and pains, the truth is that ignoring potential foot and ankle injuries can lead to serious problems. As athletes continue to place pressure and strain the area further, a mild injury can turn into something as serious as a rupture and may lead to a permanent disability. There are many factors that contribute to sports related foot and ankle injuries, which include failure to warm up properly, not providing support or wearing bad footwear. Common injuries and conditions athletes face, including:

  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Plantar Fasciosis
  • Achilles Tendinitis
  • Achilles Tendon Rupture
  • Ankle Sprains

Sports related injuries are commonly treated using the RICE method. This includes rest, applying ice to the injured area, compression and elevating the ankle. More serious sprains and injuries may require surgery, which could include arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery. Rehabilitation and therapy may also be required in order to get any recovering athlete to become fully functional again. Any unusual aches and pains an athlete sustains must be evaluated by a licensed, reputable medical professional.

Symptoms of Sever’s Disease

Children have very resilient bodies; however, children can also be particularly susceptible to developing certain foot conditions. Specifically, young children are prone to developing a condition known as Sever’s disease. This condition is an overuse injury caused by pulling on a child’s growing heel bone. Young athletes are at a higher risk of developing Sever’s disease. Symptoms of Sever’s disease can vary widely, but there are several relatively common symptoms of Sever’s disease. For example, children with this condition often have heel pain. Young patients may also experience tenderness in the foot when squeezed at the back. As a result of this condition, a patient could even potentially experience some warmth and swelling in the affected foot. If your child struggles with heel pain, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist today.

Sever's disease often occurs in children and teens. If your child is experiencing foot or ankle pain, see one of our podiatrists from Footcare Now. Our doctors can treat your child’s foot and ankle needs.

Sever’s Disease

Sever’s disease is also known as calcaneal apophysitis, which is a medical condition that causes heel pain I none or both feet. The disease is known to affect children between the ages of 8 and 14.

Sever’s disease occurs when part of the child’s heel known as the growth plate (calcaneal epiphysis) is attached to the Achilles tendon. This area can suffer injury when the muscles and tendons of the growing foot do not keep pace with bone growth. Therefore, the constant pain which one experiences at the back of the heel will make the child unable to put any weight on the heel. The child is then forced to walk on their toes.

Symptoms

Acute pain – Pain associated with Sever’s disease is usually felt in the heel when the child engages in physical activity such as walking, jumping and or running.

Highly active – Children who are very active are among the most susceptible in experiencing Sever’s disease, because of the stress and tension placed on their feet.
